IUL vs. Roth IRA: Diferencias Importantes y Cómo Pueden Complementarse
1. Roth IRA e IUL: qué es cada uno
Roth IRA
- Individual Retirement Account
- funded with after-tax dollars
- qualified distributions can generally be federally tax-free
- can hold direct investments
- no life-insurance death benefit
- no medical underwriting
IUL
- permanent life insurance
- generally funded with after-tax dollars
- provides a contractual death benefit
- can accumulate cash value
- indexed strategies reference market indexes but do not directly invest in them
- generally requires underwriting
Roth IRA is a retirement investment account. IUL is permanent life insurance with cash-value features.
2. Límites de aportación: una diferencia importante
For 2026, the combined annual contribution limit across Traditional and Roth IRAs is:
$7,500
or:
$8,600 for individuals age 50 or older
subject to taxable-compensation requirements.
Direct Roth IRA contributions are also subject to income limits.
For 2026:
- Single / Head of Household: $153,000–$168,000 phase-out.
- Married Filing Jointly: $242,000–$252,000 phase-out.
2026 IRS limits — subject to future change.
IUL
An IUL does not use the Roth IRA annual contribution or MAGI limits. But this does NOT mean unlimited funding. IUL funding capacity depends on:
- age;
- underwriting;
- death benefit;
- product;
- IRC Section 7702;
- IRC Section 7702A;
- MEC limits;
- contract rules.

3. Cómo crece el dinero
Roth IRA
A Roth IRA is the tax structure around the investments. The account can hold investments such as ETFs, mutual funds, stocks and bonds. The value can rise or fall based on those investments. A Roth IRA invested in the stock market can participate directly in market gains, but it can also experience market losses.
IUL
An IUL does not directly invest cash value in the S&P 500 or another index. Instead, indexed strategies calculate interest using a formula that may contain floor, cap, participation rate and spread. Many indexed strategies use a 0% floor on indexed-interest crediting. But: 0% floor does not mean cash value can never decline, because policy charges, loans and withdrawals can still reduce policy values.

4. Acceso al dinero: Roth IRA vs. IUL
One important advantage of Roth IRA is frequently misunderstood. IRS ordering rules generally treat Roth IRA distributions in this order:
- Regular contributions
- Conversions and rollover contributions
- Earnings
Because regular contributions were made with after-tax dollars, a return of those regular contributions generally is not taxable. Therefore: it is incorrect to say that every dollar inside a Roth IRA is locked until age 59½. Age 59½ and the applicable five-year rules become especially important when determining whether distributions of earnings are qualified.
IUL
Cash value may potentially be accessed through withdrawals and policy loans. Policy loans: generate interest; create policy debt; can reduce death benefit; can affect policy sustainability; can create tax consequences if improperly managed.

5. ¿Puedo pedir un préstamo de un Roth IRA?
No.
IRAs do not permit participant loans. Accessing Roth IRA money requires a distribution under applicable IRA rules. This is fundamentally different from an IUL policy loan, where policy value serves as collateral for a loan under the insurance contract. Do not describe one mechanism as universally superior.
6. Costos, underwriting y protección familiar
Costs
A Roth IRA can potentially hold low-cost investments, although fees depend on provider, investments and advisory arrangements. An IUL can contain: Cost of Insurance; administrative charges; expense charges; surrender charges; rider charges; loan interest.

Underwriting
Roth IRA: no medical underwriting. IUL: generally requires insurance underwriting.
Death Benefit
A Roth IRA can transfer its remaining account assets to beneficiaries, but it is not life insurance. An IUL includes a contractual death benefit. Life-insurance death proceeds are generally excluded from federal gross income under applicable rules, subject to exceptions.
7. Comparación rápida: IUL vs. Roth IRA
| Característica | Roth IRA | IUL |
|---|---|---|
| Tipo | Cuenta de retiro | Seguro de vida permanente |
| Funding | After-tax | Generally after-tax |
| Direct market investment | Sí, dependiendo de inversiones | No |
| Annual contribution limit | $7,500 in 2026 / $8,600 age 50+ | Different insurance/tax limits |
| Income limits | Sí para direct Roth contributions | No Roth MAGI limits |
| Medical underwriting | No | Generally yes |
| Market downside | Depends on investments | Indexed floor can limit negative index credit |
| Market upside | Direct according to investments | Subject to crediting formula |
| Loans | No | Policy loans may be available |
| Death benefit | No contractual life-insurance benefit | Sí |
| Owner lifetime RMD | No | Not an IRA |
This comparison is educational and simplified. Individual circumstances and contracts vary.
8. ¿Cuál es mejor: Roth IRA o IUL?
Neither is universally better.
A Roth IRA can be very attractive for someone seeking: direct market investing; potentially low investment costs; qualified tax-free retirement distributions; no medical underwriting; no lifetime RMD for the original owner.
An IUL may deserve consideration when someone also needs: permanent death-benefit protection; additional long-term funding capacity; cash-value accumulation; indexed-crediting mechanics; policy access; additional legacy or tax-diversification characteristics.
The tools solve different problems.
9. Cómo pueden complementarse
For some households, the decision does not have to be: Roth IRA OR IUL. It may be: Roth IRA AND IUL, when the household has sufficient sustainable cash flow and each tool has a defined purpose.
A Roth IRA can serve as: a tax-advantaged retirement investment bucket.
An IUL can serve as: a permanent protection and cash-value bucket with different access mechanics.
Together, they may provide: different tax characteristics; different growth mechanics; different access rules; beneficiary protection; additional financial flexibility.
Do not claim that using both guarantees a better outcome.
10. Cómo analizamos esta decisión en Kingdom USA Financial
At Kingdom USA Financial we do not begin with: “Which product should replace the other?” We first evaluate: household budget; employer retirement benefits; Roth IRA eligibility; existing retirement savings; protection needs; time horizon; liquidity needs; sustainable monthly savings.
If someone already has access to useful retirement benefits, we take those into account before designing an IUL. The IUL should have a specific job that the household actually needs. The objective is not to force one product to win. It is to determine what each dollar should accomplish.
